Globalization of the Hmong People
Relocation
Globalization of the Hmong people has been occurring all throughout
history due to their society being mainly composed of refugees who move
from one country to another.
The most recent historical example that has influenced Hmong globalization would be the Vietnam War. During this war the Hmong became allies with the United States and assisted with fighting Laos to prevent the spread of communism.
When the war came to an end the Hmong lost nearly 1/3 of their population to the Laotian army and as a result they began leaving the country and migrating toward Thailand. However, as time went on they were eventually pushed out and the United States began to accept Hmong refugees into their country.
Since then the Hmong have been rapidly immigrating into the United States. Although they have been adopting our culture and integrating quite rapidly the Hmong often hold festivals and other religious events to celebrate their culture and remember their roots. The Hmong place great emphasis on celebrating their culture because they fear if they do not they will lose their roots as they integrate deeper into the United States "melting pot".
